The precautions that apply to any cold therapy apply to FirstIce.
Patients are frequently told to use cold therapy for chronic pain, post-surgery and post-injury. Patient compliance is difficult and we all know why. Ice feels too cold, lumpy, and becomes awkward as the ice melts it can leak on wounds or bedding. FirstIce has none of these problems. FirstIce is a lot like a bag of peas but lasts far longer.
Prior to a surgical procedure, have your patients purchase FirstIce and freeze them so, when they get home, cold therapy will be immediately available. Typically, they will need two or three packs for a smaller procedure (such as a hand or toes) or four to six packs for a larger procedure (knee, ankle). In use, while one or two bags are on the body, the other packs are refreezing--This is convenient and effective cold therapy.
An ace bandage will hold the packs in place if necessary. It is always best to have a thin fabric between the pack and the skin for maximum comfort and safety. Direct the patient to read the instructions on the package.
